Here’s a crash course on Pet scans:
A PET scan is a test that creates 3 dimensional (3D) pictures of the inside of your body. PET stands for positron emission tomography. The PET scan uses a mildly radioactive drug to show up areas of your body where cells are more active than normal and makes a picture of where glucose is being used in the brain. Malignant tumor cells show up brighter in the picture because they are more active and take up more glucose than normal cells.
Why do I have to eat a high protein diet before a PET scan?
The accuracy of the test depends on the type of diet maintained 24 hours prior. However, It is not necessary to stay hungry before a PET scan. I can always eat food that is rich in protein. A high protein, low carbohydrate diet makes certain that the glucose level in my body is maintained.
Freaky but not dangerous, I will give off very low levels of radiation for around 6 hours afterwards. As a precaution, i should avoid being close to women who are pregnant during this time. I am safe to be around adult pets, as long as they are not pregnant. Not a problem
