My roommate needs your help.

Also written by Judith

Hans and I head over to the hospital.  No nose tube and she looks much stronger than I feared.  Fortunately, Deb has been alert enough to tell the hospital staff to stop bringing her foods that she is not supposed to eat.  She is not, however, in the mood to talk about her experiences.  Rather, she informs me that her roommate is in need of my help and  Deb promised her that I would talk to her.  Her roommate was badly beaten up by her boyfriend and needs to be directed to various social services, with which, in my role as a director of a community mediation center, I am well connected.  I step through the curtain to the other side of the room and introduce myself.  The small, slim woman on the bed looks like she is in her late 20’s, early 30’s.  Her jaw is wired shut and she is pretty bandaged up.  We discuss the situation and I put all the relevant contacts on one of my cards and give it to her after discussing the processes for obtaining the services she will need.  It feels good to be able to do something useful for someone.

This is so Deb.  No matter what she herself is going through, she can never be a bystander when someone else needs help.    No wonder I love her so much.

Hans texts me later to let me know that Deb has been released and is peacefully sleeping at home. I thank him for taking such good care of my little sister.  He tells me she is the love of his life.  More good news –they are going to Largo tomorrow to haver a port put in for her chemo.   The clock is running but Deb is still in the game!
